How to Love Yourself (The Islamic Way)

When we hear the term self-love today, it often sounds like confidence, independence, or even treating yourself to the things you enjoy. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, Islam teaches us that self-love goes much deeper than that.

In Islam, loving yourself isn’t about ego or putting yourself above others. It’s about seeing your worth through the eyes of your Creator.

Allah reminds us in the Qur’an: “We have certainly honored the children of Adam” (17:70). Just pause and reflect on that for a moment, you are already honored. Not because of how you look, how much you have, or what people think of you, but simply because you were created by Allah.

And that alone makes you worthy.

So what does it really mean to love yourself in the Islamic way?

It starts with taking care of your soul. Protect your relationship with Allah, hold onto your salah, because it’s not just an obligation, it’s your source of peace. Guard your modesty, because haya’ is a form of beauty that goes beyond what the eyes can see. And take care of your heart, because that’s where your iman lives.

But here’s something we often forget, self-love also means being gentle with yourself.

You’re not perfect, and you’re not meant to be. There will be days when you fall short, when you make mistakes, when you feel distant. And that’s okay. What matters is that you return.

Make tawbah. Start again. Trust that Allah’s mercy is always bigger than your sins.

The Prophet ﷺ said, “All the children of Adam are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who repent.”

Isn’t that comforting?

So don’t be too hard on yourself. Loving yourself means giving yourself the chance to grow. It means choosing hope over guilt, and faith over despair.

Sometimes, self-love looks like those quiet moments where you whisper,
“Ya Allah, help me become someone You love.”

And in those moments, you’ll begin to realize something beautiful, your worth has never been defined by this world.

You were created with purpose. With dignity. With a kind of beauty that goes far beyond what people can see.

And maybe… that’s what true self-love really is. 💛
